Modesty is regarded as a virtue in Chinese culture, and it is reflected in every aspect of everyday life. For example, when someone pays you a compliment, you are not supposed to accept it. Instead, depending on what the compliment is, you always try to deny it. For instance, if someone praises your cooking by saying :

“你做的饭真好吃” (Nī zuò de fàn zhēn haochi*, Your food is really tasty),

 the most common reply would be *'不好,不好'(Bù hão, bù hǎo)* meaning *"not at all"* or 

'哪里,哪里' (nǎ lǐ, nǎ lǐ),* or *过奖 过奖 guò jiǎng* that Can be repeated twice, meaning "you're flattering me, I'm flattered, it's an overpraising". 

However, due to Western influence, young people these days are starting to accept the compliment by saying “谢谢”(xièxie, thank you).
