Introduction:
Life is full of contrasts, and so is language! The structure 虽然...但是... (suīrán... dànshì...) is used to express "although" or "even though." It's one of the most common and useful conjunction pairs in Chinese.
The Core Structure:
虽然 + [Situation 1], 但是 + [Contrasting Situation 2]
The first part (虽然) admits a fact, and the second part (但是) introduces a contrary or unexpected outcome.
Examples:
虽然下雨了，但是我们还是去公园了。
(Suīrán xià yǔ le, dànshì wǒmen háishì qù gōngyuán le.)
Although it rained, we still went to the park.
这个手机虽然很贵，但是质量非常好。
(Zhège shǒujī suīrán hěn guì, dànshì zhìliàng fēicháng hǎo.)
Although this phone is expensive, its quality is very good.
他虽然很忙，但是每天都给我打电话。
(Tā suīrán hěn máng, dànshì měitiān dōu gěi wǒ dǎ diànhuà.)
Although he is very busy, he calls me every day.
Important Note:
Unlike in English where we use "although... but..." is grammatically incorrect, in Chinese, you must use both parts together. It is a fixed pair.
